La Paz, BCS, Mexico – On November 12th, Yates Mexico—YachtsMX proudly hosted a press conference aboard our luxurious Sunseeker 90’ yacht to announce the highly anticipated 2024 Maja El Grande de Orilla Tournament. This premier event promises an exciting year ahead for sport fishing enthusiasts, bringing together the best talent and passion from around the region.
Scheduled for November 17th at Playa La Palizada in Todos Santos, this year’s event boasts a prize pool exceeding $505,000 MXN (nearly $25,000 USD), making it one of Mexico’s premier shore fishing tournaments.
The press conference featured prominent figures, including tournament director Alfonso “Poncho” Navarro, FONMAR director Martín Inzunza, and Ferremar CEO Paco Rocha, the event’s official sponsor.
Together, they highlighted the tournament’s impact on regional tourism. Navarro noted that the increased prize pool almost doubled last year’s, incentivizing competitors and attracting tourism, fostering economic growth in the area.
Additionally, he emphasized that the Maja el Grande de Orilla Tournament is more than just a fishing competition—it is a platform to promote tourism, organized by sports fishing experts and PR professionals dedicated to supporting the local economy through events and exhibitions.
This year, the goal is to exceed half a million pesos in prizes, establishing Todos Santos as a world-class destination for shore fishing.
What is the Maja el Grande de Orilla 2024 Fishing Tournament?
Organized by the Maja el Grande Club, the Maja el Grande de Orilla fishing tournament has become one of the most celebrated in Mexico. With a compelling prize pool, it promotes sport fishing in the region.
Hugo García, Director of Public Relations, noted the tournament’s national reach, with support from government and corporate sponsors nationwide.
With over 300,000 views on social media, influencers, and celebrities reaching 15 million followers, this event has helped spotlight La Paz and Baja California Sur as top tourist destinations.
In 2023, the tournament awarded nearly $4 million MXN in prizes, and this year’s rewards are set to exceed 3 million pesos.
Prizes for the 2024 Maja el Grande Tournament
The Maja el Grande Tournament offers prizes for the top ten finishers, giving more attendees the chance to win:
- 1st Place: 115,000 pesos
- 2nd Place: 75,000 pesos
- 3rd Place: 50,000 pesos
- 4th to 8th Place: 10,000 pesos each
- 9th and 10th Place: 5,000 pesos each
Spanning a 3-kilometer stretch of shoreline, the tournament aims to set a new record for participants. A special “catch and release” category promotes responsible fishing and conservation practices. This second annual tournament celebrates sport fishing and strengthens tourism in Baja California Sur.
With record-breaking prizes and high participation goals, the November 17 competition will position Maja el Grande as one of Mexico’s most prestigious fishing tournaments.
The “Fishing in the Five” Initiative
Maja el Grande is part of the “Fishing in the Five” series, launched in 2022 to revitalize sport fishing in the region. According to Juan Javier García Davis, State Coordinator of Sport Fishing Tournaments, the series has grown in popularity, increasing from 130 participants in its first year to 167 teams in 2022.
This year, FONMAR anticipates even greater attendance from local and international anglers, who will enjoy the beautiful scenery and marine diversity of La Paz Bay and Playa La Palizada.
Schedule for the 2024 Tournament
The event will begin on November 16 with a welcome party, where participants and attendees can enjoy food and drinks as they prepare for the big competition the next day.
On November 17, activities will start with registration at 4:30 a.m., and the competition will kick off shortly afterward. The weigh-in will close around 12 p.m. when the winners will be announced.
